QUARRY COMMISSION HAPPENINGS
On October 8, 2007, the Quarry Commission held its monthly meeting. Citizens expressed concern about the increased effects from blasts during August and continuing into October. The October 2nd blast was especially noted as being very strong. The representative from Austin Powder noted some conditions that could have made that blast more significant. He agreed to look at changes to future blasts to reduce their effect.
The representative from Vibra Tech reported that fifteen blasts were monitored during the month of September and a significant number of blasts were in the lower frequency range (below 14 Hz) which could have caused the blasts to feel stronger.
Many of the September blasts were located near the west wall of the quarry. When asked how many more blasts remained in the area of the quarry closest to Trophy Oaks subdivision, the Austin Powder representative estimated that forty-eight blasts remained and it would take 8 to 12 months to complete them.
Citizens that are interested in having quarry blasts monitored at their residence should contact a member of the Quarry commission.
On Wednesday, October 17, and open forum entitled “Your Neighbor the Quarry and Texas Soils” was held in City Hall. Presentations were made by Mr. Jerry Warden - Quarry Commission member, Mr. Neil Young - VP/General Manager Southern Division of Hanson, Mr. Bruce Northrup - Division Technical Representative of Austin Powder, Mr. Joe Crownover - Vibra-Tech Engineer, and Mr. Gabriel Orenales, Jr. a professional engineer and Raba-Kistner Consultant. Citizens in the audience were afforded the opportunity to ask questions.
