December 2009 Now Over 1,400 Households Served Publisher: Jay Feibelman
Editor: Joseph K. Britan

From Our Mayor
Jay F. Feibelman

This was a tough year for all, going through what was possibly the worst drought in South Texas history. It got scary, as our wells continued a downward spiral, but we made it and it finally rained, in some cases too much. Some homeowners suffered water damage. In that regard, we are working with our engineers to identify and create a storm water master plan to address this issue head-on in the future. Regarding our 2009 drought, the uncertainty of future water reserves and continued growth, the city has initiated a 4 million dollar water improvement effort to protect Garden Ridge for many years to come. This will include a new 1,000,000 gallon elevated storage tank, a new water well and enhanced booster pumps to provide the water needed into the future. Also regarding water, the Edwards Aquifer Authority (EAA) has announced a $2.00 increase in management fees per each acre foot of water. We do not intend to pass this cost on to our water users.
Thanks for your continued support. Have a wonderful holiday and Christmas

Credit Card Scam
‘Tis the season.
Beware of any calls regarding your credit card numbers, specifically the 3 digit security code on the back of the card.
The scammers may already have your credit card number and your address and phone number and they will use that information to get you to divulge the 3 digit pin code on the back of the card.
DON’T GIVE IT TO THEM!!

Gift Card Scam Alert
Be careful how you purchase Gift Cards for holiday gift-giving. It appears that it is safer to purchase cards directly from a clerk than select them from open display shelves. Crooks can copy numbers from gift cards on store racks. Then, after the card is purchased and activated, buyers use them to shop online by entering the card numbers. So do the crooks. They phone an 800 number to check on the balances for card numbers they have copied. When they discover activated cards, they use the card numbers to buy merchandise on a store's web site. The legitimate owner of the gift card may find the account empty before they even have an opportunity to make purchases.

Pearl Harbor

Remember Pearl Harbor
by Nancy Feibelman
On Pearl Harbor Day, 7 December 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Surviving the attack was one ship, the U.S.S. Raleigh, which followed Admiral Nimitz’s ship from island to island until they reached Tokyo Bay, where it witnessed the signing of the surrender ending WW II.
On board that ship was Garden Ridge resident G. C. Lilley. For more information on the Pearl Harbor attack, read The Broken Seal.

Library Footnotes
by Suzanne McCandless
This month brings a few additions and changes to your library. First, we have put in a new display to showcase our newest arrivals. Just to your left as you come in, you will find a shelf with our latest purchases and donations. Each new book is labeled “NEW” on the spine.
A very beautiful new addition is our 16-inch lighted globe that stands at the end on one row of shelves. You can find where you have been and where you want to go with great ease.
A small change in policy is that VCR tapes and DVDs will now carry a checkout period of three (3) weeks instead of 1 week. We are still an overdue fine free library but we do emphasize that that we greatly appreciate the courtesy of those who do return materials by the due date. Remember, if you find that you can’t meet that due date, you can recheck with just a phone call (651-6570).
Some of the many books showing up on the new book shelf this month include three by James Patterson: Sunday at Tiffany’s, Run for Your Life, and his newest The Murder of King Tut a nonfiction thriller about what really happened to King Tutankhamen in 1324 BC. Other thrillers on the shelf will be Stewart Wood’s Shoot Him if He Runs and Hot Mahogany. A recent acquisition is John Updike’s The Widows of Eastwick, a sequel to the Witches of Eastwick, now the basis for a TV series. We have the Witches of Eastwick in both book and VHS form.
