From Our Mayor
Jay F. Feibelman
With the current world situation, the war on terror, our troops in harms way, etc., November 11th, Veterans Day takes on a regenerated meaning. This year on Veterans Day, make a conscious effort to pause and reflect on the meaning and significance of the day.
The observance was originally designated Armistice Day, the date which signified the end of WW I. Documents were signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It was subsequently changed to Veterans Day to honor all who serve.
Honor all who are serving and have served to preserve the freedoms we enjoy.

Postal Business Change
Acres of Diamonds and the Post Master store in Schertz have terminated their contract with the Postal Service to provide an expanded Global Shipping and Business Center for you. Both facilities will continue to provide the postal services; providing stamps at USPS rates and package shipping a slight surcharge via USPS. To improve your shipping choices, they now provide FedEX Air and Ground, UPS, and DHL shipping capabilities. They will add full service packaging in the near future and plan to add PO boxes a bit later. Additional services include personal pickup and forwarding of mail, acceptance and short term storage of packages from UPS, FedEX, and DHL carriers. Notary services and homebound services are also available. Call 651-4515 for more information on available services.
Beware of Paper
on the Back Glass of Your Vehicle
Heads up everyone. You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside. You start the engine and shift into Reverse. When you look into the rearview mirror to back out of your parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift into park, unlock your doors, and jump out of your car to remove the paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view.
When you reach the back of your car, that is when the car jacker appears out of nowhere, jumps into your car and takes off.
Guess what ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. So now the car jacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity is now compromised!
BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED.
If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just drive away and remove it later.

Library Footnotes
by Nancy Feibelman
Since 1955 when the files about World War II were unsealed and made available to the public, many books, research articles, and special movies are being made. One of the first of these are the book and video THE WAR by Ken Burns which was recently shown on PBS.
The book is simply wonderful and every high school history teacher and student should read it. Full of photographs and interestingly written, THE WAR covers the years from Pearl Harbor to the Bomb.
In 2003, the classified information about the Korean War should have been released, but I have not seen any announcement. The probable reasons are the division of Korea into North and South, the guarded border, the relationship between the two Koreas towards each other and the weapons systems that the North wishes to build.
Check them out!
STORY HOUR: 1st Saturday of Nov at 11:00 am.
Ages 4 to 8 accompanied by a parent, please.
Garden Ridge - Braken
Lions’ Club Thanks You
On behalf of the Garden Ridge - Bracken Lions’ Club, I thank everyone in the community who helped make our annual Fish Fry, BBQ, and Auction a great success. Because of your generous contributions, we will be able to continue many important services to our community. The Lions in our club could not achieve our civic and humanitarian goals without the support of our entire community.
Last year we were able to provide Christmas groceries and gifts to many needy families, scholarships to local high school graduates and Texas Lions Camp counselors. We are major contributors to the Texas Lions Camp for Disabled Children in Kerrville, and Lions Club International, which is the leader in providing blindness prevention services, leader dogs for the blind, diabetes prevention and research and many other services. We also support other local organizations such as the Bracken Fire Department, Boy Scouts, Garden Ridge Library, Texas Boys and Girls State and many others.
Thanks to all of you who donated and volunteered to work before, during and after the Fish Fry, BBQ, and Auction. We could not pull off an event of this magnitude without everyone’s help. For membership information, contact Dick Vogt at 651-5894.
The planning process has already begun for next year’s event which is scheduled to be held the first Saturday in October at the Garden Ridge Community Center. See Ya There!
