From Our Mayor
Jay F. Feibelman

It seems every year I say I knew it was the 4th of July because it was raining! Regardless, the rain held off somewhat and all seemed to have a good time. Thankfully, I started the parade a few minutes early because right at the end the rain hit. I apologize to any who may have been inconvenienced by the early start, but all should agree it worked out well. We went through a lot of food — 4th of July fare, hot dogs and burgers. Thanks to all who made it a fun day — too many to mention, but the Lions’ and Women’s Clubs, GRPD, and Garden Ridge Public Works. Contributions of time and monies enabled the city to provide food for contributions only. In that regard, thanks to all for your generous contributions. As always, it was a lot of work, but worth it to see people have a good time and to preserve the tradition.
Have a fun, safe summer!

Library Footnotes
By Nancy Feibelman and Jill Peters
If you are a history buff, this is the time for you. At the end of May 1945, most documents were sealed about the war in Europe for 50 years. Data is now emerging through research of authors, historians, and others resulting in interesting and informative writings. One of these is Berlin, the Downfall, 1945 by Antony Beevon who discovered the location of Hitler’s remains. The book begins with the German retreat from the Soviet Union and concludes with the fall of Berlin. Excellent reading!

Wurstfest and BVFD
Attention BVFD Wurstfest Volunteers
The Bracken Volunteer Fire Department (BVFD) Board has voted to withdraw from participating in the New Braunfels Wurstfest. It was a hard decision and was based on many factors (profit vs. effort, BVFD financial business model, changes to Wurstfest contract, etc.). Even though it was a difficult decision, it was agreed by all that it is the right decision. The Board will begin planning a Garden Ridge area event to keep the “potato pancake tradition” alive and to continue to raise funds for our Bracken Volunteer Fire Department. Volunteers will still be needed to cut those potatoes, make that batter, and fry those pancakes! The details will be made available when finalized.
