Hotel Key Card Retraction
Often in this newsletter, articles are published to protect the citizenry from potential scams and identity theft. In the June issue, an article entitled “Hotel Room Keys — Use with Caution” was published with that intent. However, through subsequent information received from the Pasadena California Police Department — where the information was originally obtained — the information and threat was not thoroughly staffed. Consequently, the following update is quoted from the Pasadena Police Department.
“As the investigation into this potential fraud risk continued, this information was shared with other members of the Pasadena Police Department and personnel chose to share this information with others before we could correctly evaluate the risk. This has caused a chain reaction of probably thousands of people being given this information before the risk was evaluated thoroughly.
As of today, detectives have contacted several large hotels and computer companies using plastic key card technology and they assure us that personal information, especially credit card information, is not included on their key cards. The one incident referred to appears to be several years old, and with today’s newer technology, it would appear that no hotels engage in the practice of storing personal information on key cards. Please share this information with anyone who has a concern over the initial information sent out to others as a precautionary measure.
There was never intent on the part of the Pasadena police Department to forward this information to others before the risk was evaluated. The information was forwarded by individuals as a possible precautionary note of interest only.”
I apologize for any consternation this may have caused.

HELPFUL TIP!
From a school nurse
A pediatrician states what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great because it works in those places where it is sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.
Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15—20), after which the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I’ve used it (and that was frequently), and it’s much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me.
Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can’t see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor’s wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn’t reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, “It worked!

Library Footnotes
By Nancy Feibelman and Jill Peters
We had hoped to have expanded library hours in place this month, however, an unexpected loophole developed so we are again on the hunt for a paid position part time employee (25 - 30 hours per week) with librarian experience.
We are in the process of putting our card catalog online, and will offer internet access as well in the very near future. Also, the Bluebonnet Award books are on the shelf and ready to be checked out. Remember the Children’s Story Hours offered this summer (see article). Library volunteers are always needed.

Call Nancy at 651-6094 if interested in the part time position or in volunteering.

The meeting is sponsored by the Garden Ridge Area Republican Club. Call Charlie Flink at 651-6631 for more information.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING
TUESDAY RECYCLING
The County has changed its system and now provides recycling on Tuesdays in the City parking lot with a garbage truck rather than the familiar recycling bins. Be assured this vehicle is for recycling (ONLY). Please do not bring trash. Also the system has expanded to accept considerably more items such as plastic bags and phone books. PLEASE RECYCLE!

You Know you are in Texas in July When
The birds have to use potholders to pull the worms out of the ground.
Hot water now comes out of both taps.
You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.
Farmers feed their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.
Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, “What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death?
