June 2009 Over 1,300 Households Served Publisher: Jay Feibelman
Editor: Joseph K. Britan

From Our Mayor
Jay F. Feibelman

Is it really that inconvenient to STOP? Although ramifications can range from somewhat minor to enormous, probably 80% do not stop at stop signs. Of the remaining 20%, some stop because they are exercising common sense and others because there is a big piece of plastic and aluminum in their way. Most do “slow roll” through, but some don’t even slow if they perceive no threat. The results, of course, can range from the normal no consequence, to a serious accident or the dreaded citation, which can cost the recipient a hefty $172 of hard earned cash — $97 to the state and $75 to the issuing authority. Believe me, Garden Ridge does not need nor want your money. Next time please pause and think if it has become an unconscious habit to ignore these important warning signs.
Along the line of vehicular safety, it costs big bucks to design, manufacture and install turn signals. Use Them!
Have a great, safe SUMMER!

Library Footnotes
by Linda Crossland
Did you know that many stories are patterned on the plot of Pride and Prejudice? Just two of the movies which are echoes of it are You’ve Got Mail and Bridget Jones. Does anyone wish that Jane Austen had written more than six novels? Mow, Carrie Bebris has written some novels, called the Mr. & Mrs. Darcy Mysteries, which perfectly render Austen’s characters and the subtle tone of their relationships. She also captures, in exquisite detail, the Regency period. Our library now has four of these novels whose titles will give you a smile: Pride and Prescience; Suspense and Sensibility; North by Northanger; and The Matters at Mansfield.
Book Club members, please note that we have more Sharon Kay Penman novels, which might interest you since you are reading one of hers in October. These are meticulously researched historical novels, including a trilogy featuring the lives of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry Plantagenet.
Also, remember to continue looking at our growing DVD collection. It is a slow process to replace videos, but we are working on it. Our audio books are also slowly changing to CDs. If you have suggestions for movies to buy please let us know — we strive to serve our public. Of course, we are most happy to receive your donations of these items along with your book donations.
