February 2010 Now Over 1,400 Households Served Publisher: Jay Feibelman
Editor: Joseph K. Britan

From Our Mayor
Jay F. Feibelman

About 4 months ago, I tasked the City Water Commission to form a Water Conservation Committee to study and provide ideas for water efficient homes for the future. With the possibility of approximately 1700 more homes to be built in Garden Ridge in currently residential zoned properties, action is needed now to ensure our water resources for the future. Eventually conservation methods will be added to building ordinances and affect all new development, residential and commercial. One such water conservation initiative immediately popped to the surface and has been approved for implementation: hot water on demand systems. These type systems can save up to 10,000 gallons of water per year per system and can be installed in existing homes. A $150 rebate is now being offered to those interested in installing approved systems (see Ordinance #54). This one item in future home building upon build-out of the city can save in excess of 50 acre feet of water per year. Meanwhile our water improvement initiative, additional water storage, and infrastructure improvements are being initiated (see City Council Actions). Thank you for support. Growth can be painful but necessary to sustain a vibrant city.

Citizen input is important and can be beneficial in developing the plan. Citizens are encouraged to submit information and/or pictures of their experiences with storm water drainage in the city. Library Footnotes
by Karen Bishop
LIBRARY WILL BE OPEN PRESIDENT’S DAY FEB 15th
The library has seen a lot of activity as patrons prepare for the cold dreary days we are seeing this winter. Books, DVDs and audio books are keeping a lot of people entertained during this “stay in by the fire” time of year. Several new titles are worthy of mention. Among them are:
The Year of Living Biblically by A. J. Jacobs. Through his alter ego, Jacob, he vows to obey the Bible as literally as possible for one year. As the jacket states, “Thou shalt not be able to put it down.” The Last Brother: the Rise and Fall of Teddy Kennedy by Joe McGinniss. Focusing on Kennedy’s activities in the “60s, the book has a 1993 copyright so it does not cover his later years. Saving Freedom by Jim DeMint. The author, called the “taxpayer’s greatest ally” by the Wall Street Journal presents his action plan to reduce debt, fix Social Security and provide a tax credit for every family. A number of new novels are also available: The Last Chinese Chef by Nicole Mones, two titles by Richard Russo: That Old Cape Magic and Bridge of Sighs, and Long Lost by David Morrell, just to name a few. With all the news about Afghanistan, do consider reading Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea. His focus is on building schools for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The library hosted 6085 visitors in 2009. Thank you for your patronage.

The Garden Ridge Quarry Commission held its monthly meeting on January 11, 2010. There were no blasts exceeding the typical blasts of recent months. A tour of the Quarry is planned in February. If you would like to tour and see a blast, please contact City Hall. We encourage all citizens to make use of the Citizen’s Blast Report, if you feel a blast was notable. Please contact City Hall or a Commission Member if you would like to have a monitor placed at your home.
Everyone interested is encouraged to attend the next Quarry Commission meeting on February 8, 2010 at 7pm.
