January 2010 Now Over 1,400 Households Served Publisher: Jay Feibelman
Editor: Joseph K. Britan

From Our Mayor
Jay F. Feibelman

Another prosperous and rewarding year for the city is in the books. Much was and is being done to insure water resources are available for the years to come. Watch for construction of a new above ground 1,000,000 gallon storage facility on Municipal Parkway and another water well, much needed for the future. As always thank all for the tremendous support given to me and the city staff during 2009. We continue to grow, but are controlling the growth.
I wish all a prosperous and Happy New Year!

QUICK NOTES
The following scam alerts are provided courtesy of the GRPD and the SAPD. If you are contacted regarding financial matters, credit cards, etc., do not give out information and get as much information as you can and contact the GRPD.

Free Medical Card Scam
Unknown individuals (probably from Canada or Nigeria) are calling elderly individuals and advising them that they can receive a "Free Medical Card" if they provide the caller with their Bank Account Number.
Advise and Alert your friends and relatives to NOT provide any Bank Account information to callers. Your bank already knows your account information; no one else needs to know.

beware

Gift Card Scam Alert
Be careful how you purchase Gift Cards for holiday gift-giving. It appears that it is safer to purchase cards directly from a clerk than select them from open display shelves. Crooks can copy numbers from gift cards on store racks. Then, after the card is purchased and activated, buyers use them to shop online by entering the card numbers. So do the crooks. They phone an 800 number to check on the balances for card numbers they have copied. When they discover activated cards, they use the card numbers to buy merchandise on a store's web site. The legitimate owner of the gift card may find the account empty before they even have an opportunity to make purchases.

PET REGISTRATION
City Ordinance requires all dogs and cats be initially registered on arrival and again each January thereafter. The cost is minimal ($5.00) and provides a tag for each pet. This tag is on the animal when lost, literally guarantees expeditious return of your treasured pet. Please comply with the ordinance. For Info: 651-6831.

Library Footnotes
by Linda Crosland
SIP ‘n READ. Thanks to a very generous donation from Sam Stocks, the Library is receiving the Wall Street Journal. We are grateful for this gift and want to encourage people to come in and enjoy this fine publication. In order to entice you, we will host a SIP ‘n READ time on Friday mornings from January 8 through January 29. Come have a cup of coffee with us at about 10 am while you catch up on the week’s Journals. I guess we’ll call it Star*Books coffee.
It is gratifying to see how the library has grown this year. 1120 new books were added for a total of 14,483, thanks mostly to donations; 158 new families became patrons for a total of 724, and we checked out 8151 books and movies. We are grateful to the Lion’s Club and the Garden Ridge Women’s Club for donations enabling us to buy the current Bluebonnet and Lone Star Books for Texas school children; and to the Knotty Knotters for their generous donation to enable us to buy new movies on DVD.
40 faithful volunteers are the greatest assets of the Garden Ridge Library. Without them, our city just wouldn’t have the quality library we now enjoy. Be sure to thank them when you come in and also look for some of the new additions. For elementary school readers, we have all 6 of the 39 Clues books, and 7 of the Sisters Grimm series.
With the Wall Street Journal, we have a lovely volume called The New York Times Complete Front Pages, which emphasizes the importance of newspapers through the past century. Certainly don’t forget to check out Cold Winter’s Kill by Bob Doerr, Garden Ridge’s own author.
Library’s Winter Hours
Starting November 2:
Monday - Thursday 10 am - 6 pm
Friday - Saturday 10 am - 5 pm

Prom Items Wanted
Cleaning out your closets for the New Year? If you have any slightly used prom or bridesmaid dresses and accessories, please consider donating them to Roy Maas Youth Alternatives for their high school girls. Prom season is coming soon — what a fabulous gift for those girls who have had such painful young lives! Please bring the dresses (have them dry cleaned first, if needed) to the City Library Monday through Saturday 10 am to Noon during January and February. Pam Camosy will take them to the shelter. Let’s share our good fortune.

Texas Forest Service
Oak Wilt Prevention this Winter
Prevention is the key to preventing Oak Wilt spread:

  • Select Well seasoned firewood
  • Safely store unknown sources of firewood
  • Destroy diseased Red Oaks
  • Avoid wounding oaks during vulnerable seasons (Feb—June)
  • Paint all oak wounds including pruning cuts

Oak firewood is an important commodity to Texans, whether it is used for firing up the barbecue pit or for warming up the home on a cold winter day. By selecting well-seasoned, disease free firewood and following other disease prevention guidelines, homeowners are taking the correct steps to prevent a new oak wilt disease outbreak in their neighborhood. Please visit www.texasoakwilt.org for more information on this devastating tree disease.

Town Meeting
Water Drainage Issues
A town meeting was held on December 15th to address the storm water drainage issues throughout the city. A crowd of about 100 listened as the city attorney, engineers, and city staff provided information and answered questions. Recently the City Council approved action to pursue a Storm Water Drainage Master Plan to identify and hopefully provide some answers and solutions to the problems occurring. The problem is being worked, but cannot be completely solved. Nature will prevent that. The situation is extremely complex, as there are private easements and public easements among a myriad of issues to be addressed. Information is on the Water Mangagement page.
